Good Product, June 14, 2011

I have had this product for about four months now and am very happy with the purchase.
Pros:
Good value for the money
Features
General construction quality
Cons:
Heart rate monitor is not accurate at all
Flex at higher speeds
I bought this directly from the manufacturer and it took about six weeks to arrive (Canada). The box look like it had been dropped several times and I was nervous to open it. However, everything was in order and good condition. Assembly was a breeze.
All in all, good value for an entry level machine.

I bought this elliptical machine directly from the supplier and it seemed to take an awfully long time to get to me. Here are the positives. It has very "smooth" operation and good resistance. I get a very good workout. Here are the areas for improvement. The heart rate monitor has yet to work correctly. I get readout of about a little better than half of my actual heart rate. I have to re-tighten the wheel nuts on the stepper bar before every workout as they loosen every time it's used. Also the foot cups are a very poor design as the guards are very short and on the inside of the foot. They should be taller and are safer for the outside of the foot as the feet have tendency to push out and not in as they are designed. Overall I am pleased with the operation and level of workout I get but unhappy with these design flaws. I did contact Smooth Fitness customer service and they didn't seem interested in providing service after the sale. I have to admit I had some pretty high expectations as the Smooth Fitness machines had very high ratings and good reviews. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt because was a newer model.

Smooth Fitness CE 3.0DS Elliptical (Sports)
Unit arrived on time.
Problem1# Broken front right plastic part (arrived in shipment) was replaced on time.
Problem2# Flywheel was making scrubbing sound even before assembly. Had to post video of scrubbing noise to convince service department of the problem.
After assembly, left pedal worked smoothly without any issues. Right pedal is going inwards at an angle when unit is in action.
Scrubbing problem:
Third party service technician came twice to fix the issue and could NOT. Feedback to Smooth's service team was given promptly by the service technician on call however no conclusive action has been taken. After several calls to Sales Manager(Ed), Customer Service Manager (Linda M.), Service Department, I got a call after 3 working days from service department without a plan on fixing the issue. The guy did not recall the problem even though he was the same guy who worked with service technician a few days ago on debugging the very same problem. Unit Service department is ill-prepared, ill-committed on fixing customer issue.
My $1100 are sitting as scrap metal for nearly 2 months in my workout room and I am helpless. SMOOTH does not live up to its market reputation!
Final kicker: Charging return shipment cost (within 60day return policy) on a DEFECTIVE unit to the customer. What a rip-off! Might as well throw money in garbage and save the hassle.
Summary:
1. Sent defective unit
2. Not able to fix issue for more than a month since reported
3. Charging return shipment cost (within 60day return policy) on a DEFECTIVE unit (from very 1st day) to the customer
4. Lack of communication between third party technicians and service team of Smooth
5. Irresponsible service department:
a) Does NOT show trust in third-party service contractor feedback
b) Does NOT keep customer updated on the status and NOT keep commitments on updates (Specially Supervisor)
c) In-capable of diagnosing the problem. Seems to be masking it by sending replacement parts and hoping to fix the issue
d) Calls customer without reading problem description and without any plan on fixing the issue
Latest 12/13/2011: Shipped replacement unit. Customer Service Manager Linda M. wrote 12/2 to my husband that they will pick up the defective unit. Now she says that he agreed to ship only console on 12/5 and dispose the rest ourselves. Since when "Console" became the defective part that he agreed to ship.
In Summary: Customer service department creates lies for their benefit and don't mind making a painful situation worse for the customer.
Any company with a sensible customer service would have picked up the entire
defective unit and assembled the replacement unit as a goodwill gesture since their brand new unit was defective from day 1.
